Cavities or caries problem experienced by approximately 85 percent of children aged under five years in Indonesia. One possible cause is the habit of drinking milk bottle at the end of the age of five. If not addressed, it would degrade the quality of child development.
This presented a specialist dental health of children, Mochamad Fahlevi Rizal, while defending his dissertation for his doctorate with the theme "The Influence of Milk Bottle Drinking habits of Dental Caries Potential at Age 3-5 Years", on Saturday (20 / 6) in Jakarta.
So far, dental caries is still a problem child health. World Health Organization (WHO) in 2003 stated, the incidence of caries in children 60-90 percent. Dental caries are decayed areas in teeth caused by the process that gradually dissolves the email (the surface of a hard outer tooth) and continues to grow into the inside of the tooth.
Caries problem in children, otherwise known as bottle caries syndrome (LCS) is often found in children aged under five end. The reason is the sugar found in milk and fruit juice are drunk at times when your child at bedtime. Bacteria in dental plaque and then convert the sugar to be damaging acid to cause tooth decay and destruction.
The fact that there are in Jakarta and around show high LCS patients who come to the child's dental clinic. From observations at the three hospitals showed that the proportion of pediatric patients who suffer from infectious diseases to come and it reached 95 percent.
Bacterium
Preliminary research shows, the prevalence of caries would be 1.3 times higher in children who have a habit of bottle-fed than children who are not accustomed to drinking milk bottle. To find the main problem of this syndrome can be traced from the aspects of microbiology, such as the role of caries-causing bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus.
Fahlevi explained, S mutans divided into four serotypes (c, e, f and k) and S sobrinus were identified as serotypes d and g. As the main bacterium causing dental caries, S. mutans can form colonies and attach to the tooth surface. A number of proteins on the surface of S mutans cells allows the bacteria to form biofilms on the tooth surface so that survive in the mouth.
In his study with children aged 3-5 years as a research subject, making milk bottles as a bedtime increases the risk of the LCS 1.03 times greater than that do not make it as a lullaby.
The frequency of bottle-fed twice or more per day will also increase the risk of incident LCS 2.27 times. Meanwhile, drink milk (ASI) was to provide protection from the syndrome.
